1-12-20

Post

  • bass intro dry without reverb
  • vocals on this track are slightly quieter than the other two, will need to bump them up just a touch

Shitshow

  • bass guitar bump the high mids

Blue

  • the guitar solo is somehow too washy/muddy. I uploaded a version of the adfong to our Dropbox where I think the solo is pretty perfect in terms of tone and levels.
    • figured the out, the stereo reverb was too high and made it feel muddy
    • reduced the reverb across the whole solo then brought it back up only on the final note of each run
    • we still get the epic ring-outs, none of the mud while picking
  • reduced treble on drums/cymbals to compensate for the master EQ changes
  • compare the levels and overall sound vs Morby’s “All of My Life” and we are getting very close

1-11-20

Post

  • 3:03-3:22, the guitar is a little overpowering
    • still working out guitar volumes throughout, it changes as FX go on/off and we switch from take to take
  • playing with master EQ for de-muddy effect, still tweaking as I hear it through various sound systems

Shitshow

  • Remove the lead fill at 1:19
  • working on master EQ

Blue

  • more cymbal edits
  • adjusted master EQ for less high mids

Blue

  • cymbal edits
  • working on master EQ for de-muddy effect, still tweaking as I hear it through various sound systems

1-1-20

Shitshow

  • at marks 1:33 and 1:35 super gulpy tom drum that has a particular pitch which my ears tell me is not in key with the song
  • adjust down the loud parts of the vocals
  • fade it out smoothly

Blue

  • lead guitar bit could be a made a little louder
  • cymbal edits

Post

  • make the bass reverb much more subtle (to where it’s barely noticeable but accentuates a bit and adds a lil extra texture)
  • undo the tongue click echo
  • reduced vocal delay

Happening

  • 3:12-3:13 instruments out of time fixed
  • deleted vocals, now is just the instrumental
  • won’t continue working on this until Jerry records new vocals he’s happy with

Threes

  • Jerry mix – unchanged by Devon – here for reference
  • Needs drums to be recorded

12-22-19

bunch of things changed on all of them, so I’m sure half of this will need to be adjusted back…

  • quieter cymbals
  • overall mix compression tweaks

Blue

  • lead reeled in, volume is lower and now changes based on if vocals are present
  • minor cymbal fixes
  • sounded a bit muddy; testing this: boosted treble and mids 1db, reduced bass guitar volume 1db
  • overall mix compression adjusted, this one was noticeably quieter than the others when played in series, now it has some more pep

Post

  • messed with static on intro + bass got reverb, ear fatigued enough where I can’t tell if it sounds terrible or great!
  • bass lost some deep sub frequencies, still testing EQ and volume
  • little vocal effect with reverb after first phrase on tongue click of “ache”
  • cymbal fixes
  • fatter toms and snare
  • overall mix compression adjusted

  • vocals down slightly
  • guitar solo more reverb and highs
  • rhythm guitar more high mids

Happening

Happening

  • Upon review I think vocals are a touch too loud on this…
  • Bass EQ
  • Bass two takes were slightly different volumes, adjusted so they are now at the same level
  • Tried swapping takes instead of increasing pitch correction on these – lmk if you’d prefer more tuning instead or if you like the punch ins:
    • 0:44-0:46 correction on the word ‘followed’
    • 1:52-1:53 – correction on the word ‘yeah’
    • 4:17- 4:20 – the inflection in the word ‘again’
  • 3:15-3:16 – timing blip in the solo fixed
  • Drum EQ got harsher, matched it to Blue
  • Reduced overall track compression, was getting a little muddy

Blue

  • Backing vocals reduced
  • Main vocals different reverb plugin
  • Drums EQ’d
  • Smoothed out levels

Happening (Instrumental)

  • Removed both vocal tracks if you still want to try another take. I’d prefer we choose the best parts of the originals rather than record new takes. IMO they sound great and we can fix little spots you don’t like vs having a different microphone and interface on some songs. Is it possible you’re being too hard on yourself? 😉

Happening

  • Swapped vocal takes, this is the first take we did
  • Has no pitch correction or real editing applied, if you like it better than the previous we can make it sound a lot sharper
